Therapy FAQs

I've never been to therapy before - What should I expect?

I view therapy as a safe, nonjudgemental space to talk openly about our thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Just as we may seek out a doctor, accupuncturist, or dentist to address physical health concerns or maintenance, we come to therapy to better understand ourselves and our patterns, maintain our overall wellbeing, and better navigate our lives. The outcome of therapy depends largely on your openness and willingness to participate and engage in the process, which may sometimes result in discomfort. remembering unpleasant experiences and becoming aware of feelings attached to those events can bring on intense feelings of anger, depression, anxiety, etc. There are no miracle cures. I cannot promise that your behavior or circumstances will change. I can promise to support you and do my very best to understand you, reveal patterns in your experience, and help you clarify what you want for yourself.

How long does therapy take?

Everyone is different and has unique wants and needs related to the length and type of treatment. Progress and growth are not linear, take time and effort, and depend on a variety of factors - your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that drive you to seek therapy in the first place. Some people are in treatment for anywhere from a few months to many years. It's my goal to help you learn how to manage and live your life in a way that feels fulfilling and sustainable and to relate to therapy however feels best for you and your life. You will have agency throughout the therapeutic process, and goals and treatment style will be determined collaboratively between client and therapist.

How often will I need to come to therapy?

Initially, I recommend a few regular, weekly sessions to establish momentum - beginning sessions include information gathering, rapport building, and identifying realistic goals. Continued frequency depends on your unique situation and recommendations from your therapist. Growth is cumulative from session to session - weekly sessions are recommended if you're seeking more consistent support while biweekly and monthly sessions are recommended for more maintenance-type support.

Do you accept insurance?

I am in-network with Aetna and can provide superbills to out-of-network clients to help with insurance reimbursement based on your out-of-network benefits.
